Diversity. Equity. Inclusion.

Why is Diversity Equity & Inclusion IMPORTANT?

Diversity. Inclusion. Equity.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) centers acceptance, understanding, and belonging to value the identities of all individuals, particularly those from traditionally marginalized communities. The work of DEI is critical in building communities of civility that enable students to achieve at their highest academic and emotional potential and thrive in a complex and interconnected world. To learn more our about Schools DEI committee, Contact us Here.

It’s Not About CRT: Reclaiming the Narrative Around DEI!

CCMF Provides Training for School Director Candidates
The fight against critical race theory (CRT) has made its way from the news cycle to Chester County. Veiled as an attack on CRT, an advanced framework that is taught in graduate schools, vocal and organized opponents are part of a national strategy to vilify core concepts in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). As fights in school board meetings transition to school board races this fall, candidates must understand the issues at stake to maximize their messaging and reclaim the narrative around embracing acceptance and belonging in schools.

This training was sponsored by Chester County Marching Forward (CCMF) in conjunction with Brandyn Campbell Communications.
In this 90-minute session, participants learned:
  •  What CRT is and how it became a topic of national debate;
  •  The national anti-CRT strategy and talking points you’ll see unfold;
  •  What DEI is and why it is essential to schools;
  •  How to refocus conversations and put your campaign message front and center.

Fact Checking the Conversations at the WATER COOLER?

Why does DEI need to be part of K-12 curriculum?
  • It creates empathy and understanding
  • It prepares our students to be successful in an increasingly diverse professional world
  • It protects our children's mental health
  • It is fiscally responsible
  • It is the right thing to do

How are we responding to Ant-DEI members in our community?
Please read and sign the positive petition that was created by the CCMF Schools Committee in conjunction with various Chester County parent groups. A petition specific to each school district has been created. It is important for you to sign the petition of the school district in which you reside.

Facts about DEI
  • A study done by the Rand Corporation states that “If student performance gaps based on race-ethnicity or family economic status were closed for future cohorts, each annual cohort in Pennsylvania would gain $3 billion to $5 billion…these equate to approximately $83,000 to $125,000 in present-value dollars per African-American and Latino student.” This will translate to significant tax dollars for all of us.
  • According to the Jed Foundation, a nonprofit that protects emotional health and prevents suicide for our nation's teens and young adults, “Mental health is significantly impacted by our unique perspectives, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, genders, sexual identities, faith traditions, and dis/abilities. Feeling understood, accepted, and supported is an important protective factor for our mental health, while discrimination, stigma, and mistreatment can contribute to emotional struggles.”
What you need to know about CRT, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
  • Equity cannot be confused with equality. The word equity is defined as “the quality of being fair or impartial; fairness; impartiality” or “something that is fair and just.” The word equality is defined as “the state or quality of being equal; correspondence in quantity, degree, value, rank, or ability.” Equality only works when everyone starts and ends at the same place, which is not how the world works.
  • DEI is NECESSARY to administering an education effectively: Basic child and brain development teaches us that a child will only learn at their best if they feel safe and secure.
  • This is NOT a political or social "position”. It is practical and necessary for our students to succeed, and it is the right thing to do.
  • Our schools MUST be a safe and brave space for our students. ALL students must be invited into the work of inclusion to keep each other safe for a stronger learning community.
  • Building understanding and empathy through education is key to this work, at all ages.
Our children will not succeed in today’s diverse society if they simply "tolerate" one another. They must be taught to understand and appreciate their differences so that they can achieve even more TOGETHER! Denial of this diversity diminishes and divides us. But embracing EQUITY expands us!
